* = 2019 full-time starter

Need #1: Cornerback

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Quinton Dunbar* (coming off a strong season, but has recently requested to be traded)
  • Fabian Moreau (2018 3rd rounder, has some starting experience but has struggled to this point)
  • Jimmy Moreland (2019 7th rounder, impressed across 5 starts)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins need to add at least one new starting CB, and you can make it two if they trade Dunbar.

Updates:

  • Signed Kendall Fuller (was an excellent nickel corner for Redskins in 2017, but struggled upon being traded to Chiefs, will be a major upgrade if he returns to pre-trade form)
  • Traded Quinton Dunbar (received a 5th round pick from Seahawks, which is not bad considering he clearly had no interest in returning to the team)
  • Signed Ronald Darby (talented but inconsistent player, injuries have been a major issue, low-risk signing)

Need #2: Tight End

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Jeremy Sprinkle (33 career catches, did not stand out despite receiving increased playing time in 2019)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins need to bring in a starting TE and address depth at the position.

Updates:

  • Signed Logan Thomas (career high 16 catches in 2019 with the Lions, not much of a blocker, good athlete, some upside)
  • Signed Richard Rodgers (brings a lot of experience, but not a starting option, has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons)

Need #3: Wide Receiver

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Terry McLaurin* (was a revelation as a rookie - 58 catches, 919 yards, 7 TDs - projects as a long term starter and offensive building block)
  • Kelvin Harmon (2019 5th rounder, showed some promise - 30 catches for 365 yards - should compete for a larger role in 2020)
  • Steven Sims Jr. (2019 UDFA, had some big games late in season, a name to watch)
  • Trey Quinn (slot WR, did not live up to offseason hype, still has some upside)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins need to add an X-Factor type WR to start opposite McLaurin. They could also use some experience - the entire depth chart is very young.

Updates:

  • Singed Cody Latimer (experienced depth, limited upside)
  • Drafted in Round 4: Antonio Gandy-Golden (great production at Liberty, excellent length and catch radius, good YAC, still a developmental prospect but will have an opportunity to play a role as a rookie)

Need #4: Offensive Tackle

Notable Free Agents:

  • Donald Penn* (LT, 37 years old, replaced Williams last year, team will likely move on)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Trent Williams (LT, one of the best offensive lineman in football, did not play in 2019 and apparently has no interest in playing for the team ever again)
  • Morgan Moses* (RT, solid player but struggles with penalties, buzz team is interested in moving on from his sizeable contract)
  • Geron Christian (2018 3rd rounder, has made two starts in his two seasons with the team, may receive opportunity to win LT job in offseason)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins need to address the glaring hole at LT and bring on competition for the swing tackle job.

Updates:

  • Signed Cornelius Lucas (6-8, 350 pounds, 16 career starts, will likely serve as team's swing tackle)
  • Traded Trent Williams
  • Drafted in Round 4: Saahdiq Charles (has the tools to be a starting LT, but is still a developing player, hough he may have an opportunity to start at LT as a rookie - given the current depth chart)

Need #5: Interior Offensive Line

Notable Free Agents:

  • Brandon Scherff* (RG, very good player but has not completed a full 16 game season since 2016, has missed 13 games over past 2 seasons)
  • Ereck Flowers* (LG, went from bust to beauty in 2019, may be too expensive to retain)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Chase Roullier* (C, very solid player, contract is up after 2020 season)
  • Wes Martin (2019 4th rounder, started 5 games when Schreff got hurt and showed promise, probable favorite to fill starting job if either Schreff or Flowers departs)
  • Ross Pierchasbacker (2019 5th rounder, played in 5 games but made no starts, can play OG or C, could also be in contention for starting job in 2020)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins will need to bring on (or resign) at least one starting OG, it's possible Martin/Pierschbacher can fill the other opening.

Updates:

  • Franchised Tagged Brandon Scherff
  • Signed Wes Schweitzer (versatile, 36 career starts, will not be handed a starting OG job)
  • Drafted in Round 5: Keith Ismael (versatile interior lineman, had a solid college career, will be backup initially but could be a possible starter down the line)

Need #6: Safety

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Landon Collins* (was pretty much as advertised in first year with team, one of the league's better safeties)
  • Troy Apke (2018 4th rounder, solid special teamer but has not done much on defense thus far, great athlete)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins need to add a starter opposite Collins.

Updates:

  • Signed Sean Davis (prior to missing most of last season with injury was regarded as a solid / unspectacular player, definielty in contention for starting job in Washington)
  • Drafted in Round 7: Kamren Curl (3 year starter at Arkansas, did not have a standout college career, figures to provide depth and special teams ability)

Need #7: Linebacker

Notable Free Agents:

  • Jon Bostic* (experienced vet, not an impact player but makes a lot of tackles)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Chase Holcomb* (2015 5th rounder, led all rookies in tackles, probable starter going forward)
  • Reuben Foster (2017 first rounder, recovering from injuries that held him out for the entire 2019 season, has immense talent if he can get and stay on the field)
  • Shaun Dion Hamilton (2018 5th rounder, showed some promise - especially in coverage - as a part time player in 2019)
  • Ryan Anderson (2018 2nd rounder, still looking looking to establish a role for himself)

Need Level: Moderate

Need:

  • The Redskins don't have a single set-in-stone starting LB, they will need to increase competition at all three LB spots.

Updates:

  • Resigned Jon Bostic
  • Signed Thomas Davis (37 years old, lots of experience with Rivera, certainly not the player he once was - but will bring leadership)
  • Signed Kevin Pierre Louis (special teams standout who could compete for a starting job)
  • Drafted in Round 5: Khaleke Hudson (smaller LB/S style prospect who had a very productive senior year at Michigan, has some upside and should become a very good special teamer)

Need #8: Running Back

Notable Free Agents:

  • Adrian Peterson (35 years old but still moves the chains, 4.3 ypc in 2019, offers reliability in event Guice's injury woes continue)
  • Chris Thompson (speedy 3rd down back who always seems to be injured - time to move on)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Derrius Guice (has talent to thrive in NFL, but only 5 games across 2 seasons due to knee injuries, 2020 is make or break)
  • Bryce Love (talented college RB who could contribute if he is able to able recover from a horrific knee injury)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins can't rely on Guice or Love to stay healthy at this point, they will need to bring on some insurance and depth.

Updates:

  • resigned Adrian Peterson
  • signed Peyton Barber (durable, but was never all that efficient while with the Bucs)
  • signed J.D. McKissic (pass-catching specialist, logical replacement for Thompson, but will have to earn job in camp)
  • Drafted in Round 3: Antonio Gibson (explosive playmaker, has limited experience at both RB and WR, tremendous athlete with good size, 14 career TDs on 77 touches tells you all you really need to know, can also return kicks, has potential to become an impactful player... if team can find a role for him)

Need #9: Quarterback

Notable Free Agents:

  • Case Keenum (nice backup QB, but not an ideal starter)
  • Colt McCoy (underwhelming but experienced backup)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Dwayne Haskins (started slow but finished somewhat strong - 69% comp rate, 5 TD, 1 INT in final 3 games, believe he can be the franchise QB this team has been looking for)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Redskins will need a backup for Haskins.

Updates:

  • Traded for Kyle Allen (has history with Ron Rivera, showed some promise as a game manager QB last season, not a bad backup option)

Need #10: Defensive Tackle

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Da'Ron Payne* (2018 first rounder, 7 sacks and 112 tackles over his two seasons with the team, good player)
  • Matt Ioannidis* (2016 5th rounder, 16 sacks over the last two seasons, one of the more underrated defenders in the NFL)
  • Tim Settle (2018 5th rounder, recorded 2 sacks in limited playing time, provides quality depth)

Need Level: Low

Need to Address:

  • Depth

Need 11: Defensive End / Edge Rusher

Notable Free Agents:

  • Nate Orchard (journeyman 2015 2nd rounder, flashed some upside in limited appearances last year)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Jonathan Allen* (2017 first rounder, 14 sacks and 129 tackles over the past two seasons, good football player, where does he fit in Rivera's 4-3 defense?)
  • Montez Sweat* (2019 first rounder, 7 sacks, very bright future)
  • Ryan Kerrigan (90 career sacks across nine seasons with the team, has always been 3-4 OLB - will he fit in Rivera's defense? possible trade candidate)

Need Level: Very Low

Need to Address:

  • Depth

Updates:

  • Resigned Nate Orchard
  • Drafted in Round 1: Chase Young (other wordly talent - production at OSU is eyeball-popping, herculean athlete - if an NFL coach could construct an edge rusher in a laboratory... they'd end up with Chase Young)
  • Drafted in Round 7: James Smith-Williams (aced the combine with great athletic testing and physical measurements, college production was about average, career has been plagued by injury, low-risk upside pick)

Need #12: Special Teams

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Dustin Hopkins* (K, consistent 84% FG percentage)
  • Tress Way* (P, 2019 Pro Bowl selection, one of the league's better punters)

Need Level: Very Low

Need to Address:

  • Nothing, the Redskins are set at kicker and punter.
