Herbert is a QB prospect with all the tools - he's got the size, the arm, and the athleticism. But the tape shows a player not yet ready for the NFL. There are too many instances of over and under throws, he lacks NFL caliber composure, and the Oregon system (predicated on screen passes) is horrible at preparing QBs for the next level - see Mariota and Joey Harrington. That's not to say Herbert can't make it in the NFL, he's got the talent - he just needs the refinement, which makes his best-case scenario one in which he does not have to play much as a rookie.

Scouting Report

vs. Auburn 2019

  • will force ball under pressure
  • fumbled on an RPO but chased the defender who recovered the ball 80 yards down the field
  • accuracy all over the place - some behind the WR, some overthrows
  • arm strength not in question, great zip on the ball
  • majority of passes under 10 yards (mostly screens) - the Oregon offensive system limits his NFL readiness
  • despite impressive combine performance - his mobility is nothing more than average - not as explosive as his testing would have you believe

vs. Washington

  • screens, screens, and more screens with some brilliant passes in between
  • excellent pass at 11:30 in 1st quarter
  • accuracy issues - under and overthrows
  • incredible pass towards the end of 2nd quarter - delivered a perfectly placed bullet over the middle while being hit straight on

Best Team Fits

  • Miami Dolphins: Herbert needs time to develop - which makes Miami a nice fit because he can sit behind Fitzpatrick in 2020.
  • Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers need to find a franchise QB and could be in a position to select Herbert with the #6 overall pick.
  • Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers isn't getting any younger, Herbert could sit, wait, and learn the way Rodgers did a decade ago.
  • New England Patriots: The quest to replace the GOAT is on.
