* = 2019 full-time starter

Need #1: Linebacker

Notable Free Agents:

  • Nigel Bradham* (team has option on contract in 2020, 31 years old, missed portion of season with injury, not an impact player)
  • Kamu Grugier-Hill* (injury-riddled 2019, flashes upside on occasion, team expected to move on)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Nate Gerry* (coaching staff favorite, called defensive plays, more suited for special teams than starting LB)
  • Duke Riley (special teams ace, could compete for starting role in 2020)
  • T.J. Edwards (2019 UDFA, special teamer / depth)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • 2 to 3 Starting Linebackers

Updates:

  • declined Nigel Bradham option
  • signed Jatavis Brown (undersized but highly athletic LB, was reserve in LA last year but has 23 career starts, figures to compete for starting job)
  • Drafted in Round 3: Davion Taylor (super athletic LB - plays with outstanding range, solid college production, still developing - but weak depth chart may press him into a starting role as a rookie)
  • Drafted in Round 6: Shaun Bradley (speedy LB, decent college production, projects more as a backup/special teamer than as a full-time starter)
  • Reserve/Retired: Jatavis Brown

Need #2: Cornerback

Notable Free Agents:

  • Ronald Darby* (injuries were once again an issue, was not an effective player in 2019)
  • Jalen Mills* (returned mid-season from a 2018 foot injury, quality of play wasn't overly effective)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Rasul Douglas (very rough 2019 season, gave up too many big plays, was eventually benched)
  • Avonte Maddox* (2018 4th rounder, nickel CB, functional player, buzz he could move to safety)
  • Sidney Jones (struggled for most of the season, but showed some promise late in year, still young and talented enough to turn it around)
  • Cre'von LeBlanc (injuries held him out for most of the season, tends to play well when given the opportunity)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • 2 Starting Cornerbacks

Updates:

  • traded for Darius Slay (elite CB - will shut down WR1s, you can't laugh at the Eagles CB unit anymore)
  • signed Nickell Robey-Coleman (highly competitive, one of league's better slot corners, a very solid signing)

Need #3: Safety

Notable Free Agents:

  • Malcolm Jenkins* (team holds 2020 contract option, incredibly durable, team leader, still a standout player, but at 32 years old and with contract demands, team may opt to move on)
  • Rodney McLeod* (filled stat sheet in 2019, a solid / unspectacular veteran player)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • None

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • 2 Starting Safeties

Updates:

  • Declined Malcolm Jenkins option
  • Resigned Rodney McLeod
  • Resigned Jalen Mills (will transition from CB to S)
  • Signed Will Parks (versatile special teams / defensive player, started 7 games in 2019, will compete for starting job in Philly)
  • Drafted in Round 4: K'Von Wallace (key member of Clemson's top performing defense, very effective tackler, also excels in blitzer role, active player, solid covering out of the slot, but lacks the range to control center field)

Need #4: Wide Receiver

Notable Free Agents:

  • Nelson Agholor* (talented but inconsistent and unreliable, probably best for both parties to move on)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Alshon Jeffery* (coming off a rough season, perennially plagued by injury, cannot be considered a WR1 at this point)
  • Desean Jackson (had a huge Week 1 performance, then missed the rest of the season with injury, exciting player when healthy, but difficult to rely on for 16 games)
  • J.J. Arcega Whiteside (2019 2nd rounder, did not live up to the hype, only 10 receptions in 5 starts, lack of separation appears to be an issue, but too early to throw the towel in)
  • Greg Ward (impressive journey from UDFA undersized college QB to functional NFL WR, should compete for larger role in 2020)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • WR1
  • Competition across depth chart

Updates:

  • Drafted in Round 1: Jalen Reagor (explosive playmaker, production dropped from 2018 to 2019, speed is his strong suit - but his Combine 40 was underwhelming, does not have elite ball skills, TCU WRs don't have a great track record in NFL, 1st round may have been a slight reach, surprised team did not attempt to trade up for a better WR)
  • Drafted in Round 5: John Hightower (speedy WR with modest college production, still a developing player, body-catcher, has some legit upside)
  • Traded for Marquise Goodwin (speedy vertical threat, injuries have limited him to only 35 receptions over the past 2 seasons, nice fit with Wentz - who likes to throw the deep ball)
  • Drafted in Round 6: Quez Watkins (nice production as a senior - over 1,000 yards with an 18.6 yards per reception average, ran a 4.35 40 - but that speed does not fully translate on the field, solid developmental prospect)
  • COVID 19 Opt-out: Marquise Goodwin (would have been a nice fit in the offense - but at least the Eagles loaded up on speedy WRs in the draft)

Need #5: Running Back

Notable Free Agents:

  • Jordan Howard (was playing somewhat well before a midseason injury ended his season, not much of a receiver, not very explosive)
  • Corey Clement (Super Bowl hero, injuries have limited him over the past two seasons, tends to be effective when on the field)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Miles Sanders* (2019 2nd rounder, broke out towards end of the season, will likely be an offensive focal point moving forward)
  • Boston Scott (Darren Sproles style player, scored 5 TDs in limited appearances last year)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • RB2

Need #6: Defensive Tackle

Notable Free Agents:

  • Timmy Jernigan (27 years old, limited to 13 games over past 2 seasons due to injury, still offers upside)
  • Hassan Ridgeway (experienced depth)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Fletcher Cox* (2019 was a bit of a down year, but still an absolute beast, a bounceback is likely)
  • Malik Jackson (only 11 games played over the past 2 seasons due to injury, now 30, is he the same player he was in 2017?)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • DT Depth

Updates:

  • Singed Javon Hargrave (excellent player, strong v. run, but can rush the pass too, big contract - what does this mean for Jackson? on paper interior of Eagles DL is SCARY)
  • Resigned Hassan Ridgeway

Need #7: Offensive Tackle

Notable Free Agents:

  • Jason Peters* (LT, 38 years old, still a solid player but injuries and age may rule out a return)
  • Haloupotui Vaitai (swing OT, has played pretty well in 20 career starts, will probably get starter money from a different team)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Lane Johnson* (arguably the best RT in the league, missed a few games last year with injury)
  • Andre Dillard (2019 1st rounder, presumptive starter at LT, but will need to make drastic improvements from his rookie year - which for lack of a better word was horrible)
  • Joran Maiato (2018 7th rounder, 0 snaps in 2 seasons, 6-8, 350 pounds, possible replacement for Vaitai)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Adress:

  • Swing OT / Insurance for Dillard

Updates:

  • Drafted in Round 4: Jack Driscoll (athletic OL, very fluid movement skills, projects as potential starter once he achieves NFL caliber strength, also an option at OG)
  • Drafted in Round 6: Prince Tega Wanogho (has LT size and athletic ability, inconsistent quality of play - but flashed dominant potential on occasion, still learning to play the position, some medical concerns, excellent value in the 6th Round for a high-upside developmental OT)
  • Season-ending Injury: Andre Dillard (torn biceps - Jason Peters will probably shift back to LT, while Matt Pryor figures to start at right guard)

Need #8: Interior Offensive Line

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Brandon Brooks* (RG, one of the league's best guards)
  • Isaac Seumalo* (LG, solid / unspectacular, certainly upgradeable, buzz that he will move to center when Kelce retires)
  • Jason Kelce* (C, still an excellent player and important member of locker room, lots of retirement rumors though)
  • Matt Pryor (OG, 2018 6th rounder, started playoff game at RT and was functional, team reportedly prefers him at guard rather than tackle)

Need Level: Low

Need to Address:

  • Eventual replacement for Kelce (or Seumalo, if he moves to center)

Updates:

  • Resigned Jason Peters (is expected to start at guard, this was a necessary signing after the Brooks injury, also provides insurance if Dillard slumps at LT)

Need #9: Defensive End / Edge Rusher

Notable Free Agents:

  • Vinny Curry (solid rotionational pass rusher, 5 sacks in 2019, Eagles may look for younger options)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Brandon Graham* (reliable production, tough and durable, not an elite pass rusher, 32 years old in April)
  • Derek Barnett* (underwhelming sack total, but among league leaders in QB hits last year, injuries and penalties have been a bit of an issue over the years, will Eagles pick up 2021 option?)
  • Josh Sweat (2018 4th rounder, 4 sacks and 10 QB hits in 2019, promising player nobody seems to be talking about)
  • Shareef Miller (2019 4th rounder, did not play as a rookie, was a productie player at PSU)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • Depth / planning ahead for Graham and possible Barnett departures.

Updates:

  • Drafted in Round 7: Casey Toohill (pass rush specialist, struggles vs. the run, ceiling probably that of a rotational edge rusher)
  • Resigned Vinny Curry

Need #10: Special Teams

Notable Free Agents:

  • Cameron Johnston* (ERFA, so he will likely be brought back, despite grading out as one of the league's least effective punters over the past 2 seasons, an upgrade is warranted)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Jake Elliott* (singed long term, %s were average in 2019, which isn't bad considering the current state of kickers in the NFL right now)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • Punter

Updates:

  • Resigned Cameron Johnston

Need #11: Quarterback

Notable Free Agents:

  • Josh McCown (legendary backup, unlikely to return at 41 years old)
  • Nate Sudfeld (26 yards old, experciend in system, has looked alright in limited appearances, does not appear to be a future starter)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Carson Wentz* (MVP-level talent, but if quality of play does not elevate in 2020 fans will be calling for his head, injuries have been an issue since high school)

Need Level: Mild

Need:

  • Backup

Updates:

  • Resigned Nate Sudfeld
  • Drafted in Round 2: Jalen Hurts (could be highly effective in a Taysom Hill-like role, also provides important depth for the injury-prone Wentz, pragmatic selection towards the end of the 2nd round)

Need #12: Tight End

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Zach Ertz* (among league's best TEs, very reliable, excellent player)
  • Dallas Goedert (took a nice step forward in year two, would be starting for a lot of other teams, will enter 2020 as the best TE2 in the league)

Need Level: Very Low
