* = 2019 full-time starter

Need #1: Offensive Tackle

Notable Free Agents:

  • Mike Remmers (made 14 starts at RT, replacement-level player better suited for a versatile depth role)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Nate Solder (mega 2018 free agent signing, has yet to live up to contract - which does not have an easy escape clause, perhaps a move to RT will lead to better results?)
  • Nick Gates (2018 UDFA, made 3 starts in 2019, provides versatile depth, may compete for a starting job somewhere along the line in 2020)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • The Giants need to add at least one (but arguably two) starting OTs.

Updates:

  • Signed Cameron Fleming (veteran swing tackle, not an ideal starter)
  • Drafted in Round 1: Andrew Thomas (highly decorated prospect, 3 year starter at UGA, excelled vs. top SEC competition, experience at both LT and RT, technically sound, may struggle to extent as a rookie with pass rush, should be a day 1 starter)
  • Drafted in Round 3: Matt Peart (outstanding length and athletic ability, has the physical traits to be special – but still developing as a player, needs to get much stronger, possible replacement for Solder at some point)

Need #2: Linebacker

Notable Free Agents:

  • David Mayo* (started 13 games in 2019, solid vs the run / struggles vs. the pass, ideally a backup)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Alec Ogletree* (had some nice moments in NY - but has not made enough of an overall impact to justify his large salary - which makes him a likely offseason cap casualty)
  • Ryan Connolly (2019 5th rounder, played well across 3 starts, but ended up on IR with an ACL tear, a possible defensive building block going forward)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • The Giants have ignored this position for too long now - they need to add at least one (but arguably two) starting caliber LBs.

Updates:

  • Released Alec Ogletree
  • Resigned David Mayo
  • Signed Blake Martinez (off-the charts tackling production, coverage and range are occasional issues, cerebral player who will take on a leadership role, solid signing)
  • Drafted in Round 6: Cam Brown (lengthy at 6-5, was somewhat dynamic in 2019, but is a raw and inconsistent player, will begin career on special teams)
  • Drafted in Round 7 T.J. Brunson (productive SEC LB, limited fluidity / range, struggles in coverage)
  • Drafted in Round 7: Tae Crowder (a former high school RB - so he's a good athlete but still learning to play the LB position, has some developmental upside as both a special teamer and defender)

Need #3: Cornerback

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • DeAndre Baker (2019 1st rounder, struggled as a rookie, but did show some slight improvement later in the season, has the talent to improve)
  • Corey Ballentine (2019 6th rounder, was thrown into the fire as a rookie and did not play well, will compete for a roster spot in 2020)
  • Sam Beal (2018 3rd round supplemental selection, career has been plagued by injuries, quality of play when on the field has not been good, though does have some theoretical upside)
  • Grant Haley (2018 UDFA, showed promise as slot corner in 2018, but took a step back in 2019, is an above average tackler, roster spot not guaranteed)

Need Level: High

Need:

  • The Giants had one of the league's worst CB units in 2019. They need to add at least one new starter and increase competition across the depth chart.

Updates:

  • Signed James Bradberry (prototypical size, held his own against elite NFC South WRs, a solid player - but not a lockdown corner - the Giants may have overpaid)
  • Drafted in 4th Round: Darnay Holmes (former 5 star prospect, lots of starting experience, very aggressive style of play - which can work for and against him, still a but unrefined, good ball skills, nice upside)
  • Drafted in 7th Round: Chris Williamson (only one season as a full-time starter, began career as a WR, has good size, developmental player)

Need #4: Edge

Notable Free Agents:

  • Markus Golden (was a pass-rush bright spot in 2019 - recorded 10 sacks and over 60 QB pressures, does have a length injury history, but is the type of established player the Giants should be interested in retaining)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Lorenzo Carter (2018 3rd rounder, talented skill-set - but only moderate production thus far, perhaps he will be better-utilized by the new coaching staff)
  • Oshane Ximines (2019 4th rounder, recorded 4.5 sacks in a rotational role, may get a chance to win a starting job in 2020)
  • Kareem Martin (signed $21 million deal in 2018, but injuries and poor quality of play make him a likely cap casualty)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Giants pass rush was often non-existent in 2019 - an overhaul is overdue. At least one new starter and increased competition is needed.

Updates:

  • Released Kareem Martin
  • Signed Kyler Fackrell (recorded 10.5 sacks in 2018, but only 1 in 2019 - largely due to a significant decrease in snaps, does not drop into coverage often - but when he does - he is effective, has a history with new Giants DC Patrick Graham, a solid signing at a reasonable price)
  • Drafted in Round 7: Carter Coughlin (undersized, moderate production at Minnesota, better pass rush productivity as junior than as a senior, high motor, but not an explosive athlete, special teams will be his path to making the team)

Need #5: Interior Offensive Line

Notable Free Agents:

  • Jon Halapio* (center, upgradeable, tore ACL in season finale)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Kevin Zeitler* (right guard, played very well in 2019, locked into starting role for the foreseeable future)
  • Will Hernandez* (left guard, 2018 2nd rounder, flashed dominance as a rookie - but regressed in 2019, has the talent to bounce back)
  • Spencer Pulley (center, made 1 start in 2019, more of a backup than a starter)

Need Level: Moderate

Need to Address:

  • The Giants need to upgrade the center position.

Updates:

  • Drafted in 5th Round: Shane Lemieux (was a 4 year starter at Oregon, technically sound player, powerful, decent athlete, primarily played guard but team expected to try him at center, nice value in Round 5, high floor / low ceiling prospect)

Need #6: Defensive Line

Notable Free Agents:

  • Leonard Williams (former #3 overall pick, acquired at the trade deadline, proved to be a nice fit - as the defensive line clearly improved once he joined the team)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Dalvin Tomlinson (2017 2nd rounder, excellent vs. the run, made some progress as a pass rusher in 2019, very solid player)
  • Dexter Lawrence (2019 1st rounder, was impressive as a rookie -  played the run well and showed some pass rush juice)
  • B.J. Hill (2018 3rd rounder, showed promise in 2018 with 5.5 sacks, but was given a lesser role in 2019, has some legit talent)
  • R.J. Mcintosh (2018 5th rounder, recorded 2 sacks in 2019, at this point is just rotational depth)

Need Level: Moderate

Need to Address: The Giants will need to either resign or replace Leonard Williams. Although B.J. Hill could factor into the replacement conversation.

Updates:

  • Franchised-tagged Leonard Williams
  • Signed Austin Johnson (run-stuffing specialist, offers little to no pass rush ability, solid depth signing)

Need #7: Wide Receiver

Notable Free Agents:

  • Cody Latimer (veteran WR4, team will likely explore higher upside options)
  • Corey Coleman  (former 1st round pick, career has yet to materialize, missed all of 2019 with ACL tear, worthy of another chance due to high-talent level and cheap price tag)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Darius Slayton (2019 5th rounder, shaping up to become one of the biggest steals of last year's draft class - 750 yards, 8 TDs, showed great chemistry with Jones, possible he takes on WR1 role in 2020)
  • Golden Tate (a solid slot WR and safety blanket for Jones, also a great blocker, will be 32 at start of season - so not a long-term option)
  • Sterling Shepard (solid WR2 - but always seems to be injured, Giants could look to trade and then explore cheaper, more durable options)

Need Level: Moderate

Need to Address:

  • On paper the Giants are set with Slayton-Shepard-Tate... but the long-term outlook for Tate and Shepard is murky. Depth is also needed.

Updates:

  • Resigned Corey Coleman

Need #8: Safety

Notable Free Agents:

  • Antoine Bethea (productive as tackler but struggled in coverage, at 35 years old team will likely pursue younger and more dynamic options)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Jabrill Peppers (2017 1st rounder, came over in OBJ trade, was generally productive before going on IR in December, still has yet to reach high ceiling)
  • Julian Love (2019 4th rounder, impressed as a rookie in both CB and S roles, considered a breakout candidate going into 2020)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Giants need to add depth to this position

Updates:

  • Drafted in Round 2: Xavier McKinney (was considered a 1st round prospect prior to running a slow 40 time at the Combine, was a highly productive player at Alabama, very versatile – centerfield type safety who can also cover the slot and line up at LB, high football IQ, leader, active style of play, could stand to improve tackling, wonder if this selection will allow Love to move back to CB)

Need #9: Running Back

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Saquon Barkley (an ankle injury disrupted his sophomore year, but his late season dominance reaffirmed his status as one of the league's best offensive players, there is no excuse for the new coaching staff not to make him the offensive focal point in 2020)
  • Wayne Gallman (proved insufficient when pressed into starting lineup following Barkley’s injury, 2020 roster spot will not be guaranteed)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • Signed: Dion Lewis (has Joe Judge-Pats connection, under 4 ypc in 2018 and 2019, but still productive as a receiver, more of a 3rd down back than a true RB2)

Need #10: Quarterback

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Daniel Jones* (showed considerable promise as a rookie, but will need to take a big step forward in 2020 in order to cement himself as the franchise QB, ball security is at the top of the to-do list)
  • Alex Tanney (has thrown 15 passes since 2012 - needless to say the Giants need to bring in competition for the backup spot)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Giants must hold a backup QB competition.

Updates:

  • Signed Colt McCoy (underwhelming backup, 8 TDs to 7 INTs over the pass 6 seasons)
  • Signed Cooper Rush (young and inexperienced backup with little to no developmental upside, signed solely on behalf of Jason Garrett, who worked with him in Dallas)

Need #11: Tight End

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Evan Engram (game-changing talent, has a strong grip on the starting job in 2020, but you have to wonder if he figures into the Giants long-term plans given his lengthy injury history - which has limited him to 19 games played over the past two seasons)
  • Kaden Smith (2019 6th rounder, originally drafted by the 49ers, Giants claimed him off waivers in September, showed considerable promise as both a pass-catcher and blocker across 5 starts, will enter 2020 as the favorite to win the TE2 job)

Need Level: Low

Need to Address:

  • Considering Engram's injury history, the Giants would be wise to increase depth at tight end.

Updates:

  • Signed Levine Toilolo (massive 6-8 frame, blocking specialist, has never been much of a receiver)
  • Signed Eric Tomlinson (blocking specialist and special teamer, only 17 receptions over 4 year career)

Need #12: Special Teams

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Aldrick Rosas (97% FG percentage and Pro Bowl berth in 2018, feel back to earth in 2019, only making 12 of his 17 FG attempts and missing 4 PATs, worth a second chance- but will be on the hot seat in 2020)
  • Riley Dixon (2019 Pro Bowl alternate, signed a lucrative - for a punter - contract extension in December)

Need Level: Low

Need to Address:

  • The Giants could add a kicker to compete with Rosas in training camp.
