Need #1: Cornerback

Notable Free Agents:

  • Kendall Fuller (came over in the Alex Smith trade, started 15 games in 2018, but only 4 in 2019 - though he did miss four games due to injury, played both CB and S last season, he's a good player but the Chiefs will probably not be willing to pay what others will on the open market)
  • Morris Claiborne (made 8 game appearances with 1 start in 2019, brings a lot of experience to the table - but the Chiefs will probably want to pursue younger reserves at the position)
  • Bashaud Breeland (underrated player - brought a much-needed level of stability to the secondary last season, though he was heavily penalized, a return makes sense if the price is right)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Charvarius Ward (best CB on the team, started 19/19 games last season, he's not a lockdown corner at this point but still has some ceiling left)
  • Rashad Fenton (2019 6th rounder, saw some action in the nickel, could compete for a full-time role in 2020)

Need Level: Very High

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs lack proven corners behind Ward, they will need to resign or replace both Fuller and Breeland.

Updates:

  • Resigned Bashaud Breeland
  • Signed Antonio Hamilton (special teams ace, unlikely to see many defensive snaps)
  • Drafted in 4th Round: L'Jarius Sneed (two years of starting experience at CB and one year at S, projects as a CB in the NFL, good ball skills, ideal size/length, ran a good 40 - but lacks fluidity on tape, could play a substantial role as a rookie)
  • Drafted in 7th Round: Thakarius Keyes (2-year starter at Tulane, excellent length... 32 5/8 arms, long speed is a concern, willing tackler, worthwhile late-round developmental selection)

Need #2: Defensive Line

Notable Free Agents:

  • Chris Jones (one of the best defensive players in the league, elite pass rusher and run defender, 9 sacks and 9 TFL across 13 games in 2019, 15.5 sacks and 19 TFL across 16 games in 2018, the Chiefs may not be Super Bowl LV favorites if they fail to retain him)
  • Xavier Williams (missed the majority of the season due to injury, two-year tenure in KC has not been very productive)
  • Mike Pennel (singed with the team in October and quickly made a positive impact as a run-stuffer, a return makes sense)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Derrick Nnadi (2018 3rd rounder, started all 16 games in 2019, he's not very disruptive - only 1 sack and 3 TFL - but is solid vs the run)
  • Khalen Saunders (2019 3rd rounder, showed some promise across 4 starts as a rookie, brings some pass rush juice to the table, could be in store for a big role if Jones is not retained)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs will need to reinforce the position if Jones leaves.

Updates:

  • Franchise-tagged Chris Jones
  • Resigned Mike Pennel
  • Contract Extension: Chris Jones

Need #3: Interior Offensive Line

Notable Free Agents:

  • Stefen Wisniewski (versatile interior backup - more than capable of making a few spot-starts)
  • Andrew Wylie (has made 21 solid/unspectacular starts at guard since joining the team as a UDFA in 2018)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (has been the starting RG in KC since 2015, quality of play tends to be average to above average)
  • Austin Reiter (started 16/16 games at center, he is a good pass blocker but only average in the running game)
  • Martinas Rankin (acquired before the 2019 season in the Carlos Hyde trade, ended up starting 5 games at LG before going on IR following a Week 10 injury, quality of play was underwhelming, but he was a 3rd round pick in 2018 after an impressive career in the SEC - so he still offers some upside)
  • Nick Allegretti (2019 7th rounder, barely saw the field as a rookie)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs have an opening at LG and could look to upgrade Duverany-Tardif and Reiter - who are solid but unspectacular.

Updates:

  • Resigned Austin Wylie
  • COVID 19 Opt-out: Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (the Chief's don't have an obvious replacement on hand)
  • Signed Kelechi Osemele (was one of the league's better guards from 2016-2017, but injuries have kept him been a limitation in recent years, at 31 years old it's tough to say how effective he still is... but this is a worthwhile signing in the wake of LDT's opt-out)

Need #4: Running Back

Notable Free Agents:

  • LeSean McCoy (solid as part of RB rotation last year: 465 rushing yards, 4.6 ypc, 28 catches, 181 receiving yards, 5 TDs, but was sparsely used in the playoffs - which indicates he probably won't be back for 2020)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Damien Williams (usage and production increased in the second half of the season - when he operated as the team's primary RB, fits  well in the offensive system due to pass-catching ability, though efficiency as a runner can be spotty - in the 11 games he received 9 or more carries in - he only averaged over 5 ypc three times)
  • Darwin Thompson (2019 6th rounder, saw some action in the second of the season but did stand out, has explosive athletic traits - so an emergence in 2020 is possible)
  • Darrel Williams (41 carries for 141 yards and 4 TDs in 2019, was not efficient or particularly explosive with a 3.4 ypc, will compete for RB3 job in 2020)

Need Level: High

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs could look to add a true RB1 - someone who can provide more reliability in the running game.

Updates:

  • Signed DeAndre Washington (has never been very efficient as a runner - but excels at catching passes out of the backfield - which is an important role in KC's offense, nice depth signing)
  • Drafted in 1st Round: Clyde Edwards-Helaire (super productive at LSU in 2019: 215 carries for 1,415 rushing yards and 16 TDs, with an additional 55 catches for 452 yards and a receiving a TD, he's short at 5-7 but has a compact build that can probably handle a 3-down role, ran a slow 40 but runs with great agility, power, instinct, and quickness, he's excellent at making defenders miss and is probably the best pass-catching RB in the draft class, should be a tremendous fit in KC - immediately becomes the team's most talented runner, though he will need to improve his pass protection before taking on a primary role)
  • COVID 19 Opt-out: Damien Williams (Edwards-Helaire should be in for a massive workload, though Thompson and Washington will likely need to take on larger roles as well)

Need #5: Linebacker

Notable Free Agents:

  • Darron Lee (reserve LB and special teamer, has not lived up to 1st round pedigree)
  • Reggie Ragland (made 7 starts in 2019, not a very dynamic player - but capable vs the run)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Damien Wilson (had a productive first season in KC - though he lacked consistency week to week)
  • Anthony Hitchens (has not lived up to massive contract - but brings stability and leadership to the position)
  • Dorian O'Daniel (2018 3rd rounder, played well on special teams in 2019 - but did not see much action on defense, he could be a replacement for Ragland)

Need Level: Moderate

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs could bring in competition for Wilson's starting job. They could also consider replacing Hitchens (and his contract) at some point.

Updates:

  • Drafted in 2nd Round: Willie Gay Jr. (only made 6 starts over his entire collegiate career - all of them coming in 2018, he was a reserve in 2019 and only appeared in 5 games due to a suspension, he was a big-time recruit and offers excellent athletic ability and size, plays with great energy/speed and hits hard, but his instincts are questionable and his overall game lacks refinement, this is a boom/bust selection)

Need #6: Tight End / Fullback

Notable Free Agents:

  • Anthony Sherman (valuable lead-blocker and special teamer)
  • Blake Bell (blocking specialist, only caught 8 passes in 2019)
  • Deon Yelder (made one start in 2019, finished the year with 3 catches for 50 yards)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Travis Kelce (arguably the best TE in football and an invaluable member of the team, his stat line over the past 4 seasons is reminiscent of a Pro Bowl WR, he will be 31 in Oct - but has shown no signs of slowing down)

Need Level: Moderate

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs need to add depth behind Kelce.

Updates:

  • Resigned Anthony Sherman
  • Resigned Deon Yelder
  • Signed Ricky Seals-Jones (plays TE but looks more like a big WR, caught only 12 passes in 2019 but 4 of them went for TDs, has some upside in KC - especially in the red zone)

Need #7: Wide Receiver

Notable Free Agents:

  • Demarcus Robinson (solid contributor, reeled in 32 catches for 449 yards and 4 TDs in 2019, capable of stepping into a starting role if necessary)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Tyreek Hill (the most dangerous playmaker in the game, not a single DB in football can run with him, his speed + Mahomes arm = LETHAL, durability can be an issue - he missed 5 games in 2019 and has had soft-tissue injury issues)
  • Sammy Watkins (underwhelming statistical production relative to contract - but the talent/playmaking ability is real and every once in a while he goes off, given his bloated contract a cut/restructure/trade is almost inevitable)
  • Mecole Hardman (2019 2nd rounder, reeled in 26 catches for 538 yards and 6 TDs as a rookie - good for a ridiculous 20.7 ypc, like Hill - he possesses game-breaking speed, a bigger role in 2020 is likely)
  • Byron Pringle (reserve WR, got a chance to play in Week 5 and caught 6 passes for 103 yards and a TD, brings nice depth and some upside to the table)

Need Level: Moderate

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs need to sort out the Watkins situation, if he leaves they will need to add starting competition for the WR2 job. Depth must also be addressed if Robinson is not retained.

Updates:

  • Resigned Demarcus Robinson
  • Restructured Contract: Sammy Watkins

Need #8: Offensive Tackle

Notable Free Agents:

  • Cameron Erving (made 8 starts at LT in 2019, quality of play was decent, offers a lot of starting experience at multiple roles along the line)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Eric Fisher (the team went 12-0 in the games Fisher played in 2019, and 4-4 in the games he missed, while correlation does not prove causation - there is no denying his value to the team, he's a very solid and consistent LT who is overly critiqued due to his #1 overall pick status)
  • Mitchell Schwartz (arguably the best RT in football, dominant pass blocker, incredibly durable and consistent, has two years remaining on contract)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs need to resign or replace Erving at swing tackle.

Updates:

  • Signed Mike Remmers (has started 78 of the 79 career games he's appeared in - including 14 games at RT for the Giants last year, quality of play tends to be in the average to below-average category, has experience at guard as well, this is a nice depth signing for KC)
  • Drafted in 3rd Round: Lucas Niang (starting-caliber size/length and athletic ability, 3-year starter at RT for TCU, 2nd-team All-Big 12 in 2018, probably would've received honors again in 2019 but hip surgery limited him to only 6 starts, moves very well for someone his size and seems to have a natural feel for the position, projects as depth for now and a replacement for Schwartz down the line)
  • COVID 19 Opt-out: Lucas Niang

Need #9: Defensive End/Edge

Notable Free Agents:

  • Emmanuel Ogbah (5.5 sacks over 10 games in 2019, also played the run well, he's only 26 so further development is certainly possible, a return makes sense if they can afford to bring him back)
  • Terrell Suggs (claimed off waivers in Week 16, appeared in 5 games and recorded 1 sack, the team will likely pursue younger options this offseason)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Frank Clark (got off to slow a slow, but from Week 7 to the Super Bowl he was ultra-productive - recording 12 sacks and 14 TFL over 11 games - despite playing through a pinched nerve, if he can pick up from where left off - the trade and subsequent contract extension will prove to have been well worth it)
  • Alex Okafor (valuable rotational DE, recorded 5 sacks over 10 games in 2019)
  • Tanoh Kpassagnon (took a step forward in 2019 and become a solid defensive contributor - with 4 sacks and 6 TFL across 8 starts, he has the size/length and pure athletic talent to progress even further in 2020 - which will be a contract year)
  • Breeland Speaks (2018 2nd rounder, failed to emerge as a rookie and then missed the entire 2019 season due to a preseason knee injury, still has upside but patience seems to be wearing thin)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs have an elite rusher in Clark, a promising starter (and potential breakout star) in Kpassagnon, and a solid rotational rusher in Okafor. But in 2021, Kpassagnon will be a FA and Okafor could be a possible cap casualty - so long-term replacements should be considered.

Updates:

  • Signed Taco Charlton (a 1st rounder back in 2017, recorded 5.5 sacks for the Dolphins in a rotational role last year, but the overall quality of play was inconsistent, he was a healthy scratch late in the season - and reportedly had issues with the coaching staff in DAL and MIA, but he does have talent and KC could be the right place for him to turn his career around)
  • Drafted in 5th Round: Mike Danna (recorded 3 sacks as rotational DL for the Wolverines in 2019, had previously been a productive starter at CMU - had 9.5 sacks in 2018, lacks length and explosive athletic ability but plays with a high motor, can lineup inside and outside, projects as a versatile rotational player)

Need #10: Quarterback

Notable Free Agents:

  • Chad Henne (spent the first half of the season in IR with an ankle injury, has only attempted 5 passes since the 2014 season, his career numbers are not good - even for a backup: 59% comp rate, 6.6 yards per pass average, and 58 TDs to 63 INTs)
  • Matt Moore (made two starts for Mahomes and performed well: completed 69% of his throws for 542 yards and 3 TDs to 0 INTs, a return makes sense)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Pat Mahomes (the best player in football.)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs need to resign or replace Matt Moore.

Updates:

  • Resigned Chad Henne
  • Resigned Matt Moore

Need #11: Special Teams

Notable Free Agents:

  • None

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Harrison Butker (one of the league's top kickers, 34 of 38 on FGs and 45 of 48 on XPs)
  • Dustin Colquitt (long-time punter, he's reliable but numbers in 2019 were underwhelming)

Need Level: Mild

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs could look at replacing the Colquitt.

Updates:

  • UDFA Signing: Tommy Townsend (Ray Guy Award finalist in 2018 and 2019, considered by most to be the top punter in the class, has had success with fake punts)
  • Released Dustin Colquitt

Need #12: Safety

Notable Free Agents:

  • Jordan Lucas (special teams ace)

Notable Players Under Contract:

  • Tyrann Mathieu (one of the most valuable defenders in the NFL, he's a legit sideline to sideline safety and is arguably the league's most effective slot 'corner')
  • Juan Thornhill (2019 2nd rounder, had an excellent rookie season - shone brightly in coverage, though he did have some issues with missed tackles, tore his ACL in Week 17 - so availability for the start of the 2020 season is questionable)
  • Daniel Sorensen (long-time special teamer and backup safety, filled in admirably for Thornhill in the playoffs)
  • Armani Watts (2018 4th rounder, has not played much in his two seasons in KC, still has some theoretical upside - but has a lot to prove in 2020)

Need Level: Low

Need to Address:

  • The Chiefs are set for the foreseeable future with the Mathieu/Thornhill duo.

Updates:

  • Signed Tedric Thompson (former 4th round pick, made 16 starts over his 3 seasons in SEA, injuries held him back in 2019, will compete for a depth role in KC)
